Artist Statement:
The desert has time. The wind is slowly but
surely turning the mountains into sand, the
sand turning into sand dunes. Underneath
is the oil, plant material that over an
unimaginable time turns into this thick,
black, desirable liquid. And the cultures are
quickly blinking by. Forming and
disappearing.
What was your starting point or your
inspiration for doing this project?
When I thought about the area, I thought
about the desert and the thing that struck
me was how small and insignificant
humans, our arguments and beliefs are in
the timespan of a desert.
Do you have a personal (or other)
connection to the exhibition’s theme?
I think everyone is connected to places were
injustices are going on and people are
suffering, and religions are formed.
What were the main reasons for choosing
the materials, shapes or technique in your
work?
I chose materials I love to work with, which
would lend themselves to my vision. The
circle is an ever ongoing shape, which
reminds us of the timespan of a desert. The
linseed creates dimension and weight, as
the knowledge of our insignificance weighs
on our shoulders.
What kind of feelings do you wish to convey
to the viewers of your work?
I want the viewer or wearer to think about
the insignificance of our disagreements and
beliefs in a larger context, and to feel the
majestic desolation and loneliness of it.
If you could give your Jewelry to an
important figure in the Middle East who
will he/she be? and why?
I want the archeologist of the future, who
wonders about our lives, to wear it. Or
maybe it would suit the people of the first
timid civilisation that formed in the Middle
East.
