Van Joolingen Machteld
The Line
The Netherlands, 2010
Brooch
Materials:
steel, silver
Techniques:
Etched steel combined with silver
Dimension in cm:
14 x8 x 0.8
Artist Statement:
The piece is built up from several parts. The
back is a lucky clover motif ment as a push
into modern times and the 2 steel
ornaments stand for the past. Together
with the silver setting all the parts are
clinched together as is the status quo.
The photo depicts hands on a barbed wire
in a palestinian refugee camp. The phote I
used is an old one from a newspaper
depicting palesinians at a camp holding
barbed wire.
For me this picture also says something
about holding on to what you are.
This work falls within a series called
‘framed’, work about the private versus the
public domain. I make an embedding, a
private frame for those whose pictures
appear in the worldnews, thrown into
public space without defense, to restore
intimacy.
